Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

Simister and Leaver Orthodontics - The Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment
Creating more than just great smiles, Simister and Leaver has become the premier center for orthodontics in Las Vegas. Catering to both young and adult patients, Simister and Leaver has helped hundreds to achieve a new smile and a better overall well-being.
Most people see orthodontic treatment as beneficial to aesthetics alone but the benefits are actually more than that. Many people initially come to see a Las Vegas orthodontist to address tooth or jaw anomalies that require more than just a dentist’s attention. These anomalies—under bite, overbite, cross bite, teeth crowding, and irregular spacing, among others—can be detrimental to a person’s health. With less than ideal teeth positioning, cleaning the teeth and gums can become a challenge. When this happens there is more risk for tooth wear and decay and gum problems. Uneven bites can also make biting and chewing difficult which can also further cause undue stress to the teeth and gums. Others also have impaired speech caused by these anomalies. Over time the conditions can worsen and lead the way to more complications such as permanent damage to the tooth and gums as well as to the jawbone. Sadly, self-confidence can also be affected by poor dental conditions. Especially among young children it is easy to become the target of bullying.

Simister and Leaver Orthodontics - The Benefits of Orthodontic Treatment

With good dental health and a great smile, there is also a significant improvement to a patient’s psychological and emotional health. It is important to note however that the success of orthodontic treatment also lies with a patient’s cooperation and diligence in following his orthodontist’s instructions and maintaining good dental hygiene. With this partnership, many patients can enjoy a better quality of life.

The Then and Now of Orthodontics

Man’s quest for a beautiful smile and better dental health is not only a thing of the present. Since ancient times it has been found that different types of braces have been used to achieve straightened teeth and better conditions. From catgut to precious gold wires, archeologists have found evidence that orthodontics though with crude methods and not scientifically approached was practiced and sought. It was only in the 19th century when the specialty became a science and tools and equipment were improved.

Thankfully since then technology and innovation has afforded better options for fixing misaligned teeth and improving smiles. While there are many types of braces now available, the most common orthodontic appliance used remains to be the traditional metal-wired braces.  Other people use braces with alternatives to the material used since traditional braces made with nickel can cause allergies to some. In those cases, gold-plated or titanium braces are used but they are more expensive. These braces—whether nickel, gold-plated or titanium—are made with visible brackets glued to the front of every tooth.  They can be convenient but they do present their own disadvantages especially in terms of comfort and appeal. That is why other options have become available to cater to the demands of the market looking for better braces ideal to their needs and wants. Clear braces are alternative as well as lingual braces which are less visible or invisible to other people.  Lately, another different type of brace is gaining popularity especially among adults—the Invisalign braces. With Invisalign they can be conveniently removed for eating or cleaning and are totally invisible to others since it is made of clear plastic worn over treated teeth. The braces are ordered as a customized set to be worn in stages as the teeth move and need to be adjusted. For those wishing for a discreet form of treatment, this is their choice.

Why Smile is Important?

Simister Orthodontics in Las Vegas Patient
Stephanie C (Actual Patient)
Many people are suffering from self pity and lack of confidence to smile because of crooked teeth; that is why they make an effort to fix it and make things better. But, why must they do it?
There have even been studies that indicate that it only takes three seconds to make a lasting impression of seeing someone.
Whether its an interview for a job, just socializing face to face or vitually, a recent perception study conducted by Kelton, proves that the alignment of the teeth causes assumptions concerning popularity, professional success ,and intelligence.
According to a conducted study by Kelton conducted January 2012, many Americans say teeth are distinct feature when it comes to what they notice and recall when first meeting someone; and two in five Americans would not go on a second date with someone who has crooked teeth and more than half believe someone with crooked teeth would be less likely to land a job when competing with someone who has a similar skill set and experience.
Dr. Michelle Callahan, renowned TV host, relationship expert, coach, and development psychologist said: “Whether we like it or not, we are often judged by our appearance”. “Your smile has more of an effect on what others perceive about you than you think.”

10 Common Dental Problems

10 Common Dental Problems
Having a great simile is what most people want to possess, a healthy smile boosts self-confidence and lifts up self-esteem. But, there are obstacles that you have to protect your smile from.
Bad Breath (Halitosis)
is an oral health condition associated with dental problems such as tooth decay, bacteria on tongue, gum disease, etc.
Tooth Decay
Also known as dental caries or cavities, it occurs when plaque (a sticky film of bacteria that forms when you eat sugars or starch), is allowed to linger on teeth for a long period of time.  Plaque then produces acids that attack the tooth enamel, making it vulnerable.
Gum Disease
Infection of Gums surrounding the teeth that causes tooth loss in most adults.
Mouth Sores
There are two types of sores: canker sores are non-virus based and caused by everything from stress to a hereditary predilection; and herpes, which is virus-based and contagious (through direct contact, like kissing, or sharing things like drinking glasses).
Yellow Teeth
this can be acquired from the food we eat, especially often intakes of red wine and coffee; but might also be natural.
Tooth Sensitivity
the root surface of the teeth can be permanently exposed if the gums recede, causing the sensitivity on cold and heat.
Wisdom Teeth
We’re are all going to have wisdom teeth, but our jaw may not handle extra teeth and will just erupt partly, causing bacteria to lurk into the soft tissue of the non-erupted part covering of the wisdom tooth.
Tooth Erosion
Tooth erosion is the loss of tooth structure and is caused by acid attacking the enamel. Exposure to acid, primarily from soda or citrus drinks, can wear down the surface of the teeth, making them rounded and discolored.
Oral Cancer
An oral cancer may start with a small, pale, red, painless lump on some area of the mouth. A dentist can easily screen for the disease by examining and feeling around a patient's mouth, head, and neck.
